If you don’t have an Adobe Creative Cloud subscription, you can still use Photoshop Elements. You must be an Adobe Creative Cloud member to use the full version of Photoshop. Here are some things to consider when using either version of Photoshop:

Brushes

Professional-quality brushes are very expensive. You’ll also need to purchase additional software. If you’re a graphic designer or photographer, it may be more cost-effective to spend the money on professional brushes than it is to spend the money on Photoshop Elements. In the long run, you’ll save more money on a subscription to Adobe Creative Cloud.

Raster graphics

Raster graphics are better suited for photo editing. If you want to create high-quality images, avoid using vector graphics tools.

Tracing

Many Photoshop Elements tools only allow you to trace lines by setting a “pen tool.” If you have a MacBook Pro and/or TrackPad, it’s much easier to use the Magic Wand tool in Photoshop Elements.

Vector graphics

With Photoshop Elements, vector graphics are treated as raster.

You’ll find that Photoshop Elements has fewer features than Photoshop. You won’t be able to save files in the AI, EPS, or PDF format, use layer channels, create Photoshop Actions, or use any of the other features of Photoshop unless you subscribe to the full version of Photoshop.

The Eraser is used to remove pixels from selected areas of an image. The eraser itself is visible as two pieces: the standard brown eraser and the white stripper. The exact same actions can be made by right clicking on the tool.

The Puppet Warp tool lets you increase or decrease the size and/or rotation of any part of an image without affecting the other areas.

The Pen tool is similar to a pencil, and therefore includes several standard drawing tools. There are four pens available: the Pencil, the Pen, the Brush and the Eraser. Other pen tools include the Marquee tool, the Spot Healing tool, the Bloat tool, and the Pen & Arrange tool.

The Path tool is a recent addition to Photoshop. It allows you to draw a path which you can then fill, manipulate, or split. The tool is very similar to the Pen tool, but with the ability to create free-form shapes.

Photoshop’s Marquee tool allows you to draw out areas of an image that you want to keep or remove completely from the rest of the image.

The Eye Dropper tool is similar to the Magic Wand tool, except that a drop-down menu will let you select up to 20 points from an image. You can then click on one of the selected points, and Photoshop will automatically fill in the rest of the image based on the selected color.

The Color Swatch tool is used to create a palette of your image. You can then use this palette to paint on the image, similar to how you might use colored pencils. You can also go back to the original image and see all of the colors used in the process.

The Gradient tool allows you to move a specified color or gradient across an image. You can control the shape of the gradient using an ellipse tool.

The Spot Healing tool allows you to repair specific areas of a damaged image. If a specific part of an image has been burned, separated, or is slightly blurred, this tool can be used to selectively restore the part of the image.

Effects
The Facial Effects feature in Photoshop allows you to create specialized filters to give your image a new look. By using one of the presets, you can customize your filter in the menus.

So, how can this work out for me, as an artist?

When I started to explore augmented reality and virtual reality there was quite a bit of worry. It’s of course easy to be negative as we’ve been burned too many times in the past. But it took a few months just experimenting, and one free and open source app that demonstrated how this could be accomplished.

With the Occulus Rift headset, we’re now able to work in 3D art apps, sketching in 3D, and graffiti and artwork in 3D! It’s mind blowing and the idea that paintings and words are possible for a fraction of the cost may be a true revelation to any artist out there.

The great thing about VR as an art platform is that you don’t have to be an artist – you can take paint and begin creating by simply gazing at 3D designs in apps like Sketchfab. In this way, VR can be a creative force for anyone, for work, for leisure and for improving the world.
